Chambers County was formed from Jefferson and Liberty counties in 1858.  Its namesake, Thomas Jefferson Chambers, was the first, and only, superior judge of Texas before the revolution.  He was active in the provisional government and was one of the charter members of the Philosophical Society of Texas.  Chambers was also a member of the Secession Convention.  He died by assassination at his home in Anahuac.
